Decorative Jewelry Boxes

When your jewelry box is closed, it looks like a stack of nice books, but when you open it, it really is a jewelry box. Once that is ready to hold your favorite jewelry pieces. The lid holds a mirror that can help you see what you are trying to put on. It's great when you have a mirror with your jewelry box. That way you don't have to move from it as you decide which piece of your jewelry to wear. The to compartment actually has six compartments that help you separate your smaller jewelry pieces making them easier to find in your jewelry box. Isn't it fun when you can find a jewelry box that is functional and decorative?

How old is old enough to give a little girl her first jewelry box?

The answer to that questions depends on two things. First the individual girl you are considering and the type of jewelry box you are giving. When a little girl starts looking for something to put a few of her special items, it's time to consider a starter jewelry box. A starter jewelry box can be considered on of those paper boxes, a plastic trinket box or a plush fuzzy box.

Plush Flower Jewelry Boxes

The lids of these charming soft, fuzzy, plush-covered jewelry boxes open up to reveal handy sectioned trays and mirrors. 4 3/4" x 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" high. Sold in a pack of 4.

Something fun, but not too expensive. This way if she doesn't take care if it, it won't be a big deal. Depending on how she handles this one, will depend on when you move to the next step. The next step might be a small wood jewelry box.

Princess Mini Treasure Box

Pretty pink mini-cabinet is a perfect place for little princesses to put all their precious treasures. Wood. 7 1/2" x 3 1/8" x 8 1/2" high.

Then you might move up to a nice hand painted jewelry box. One that is not little girlish, but not totally an adult jewelry box.

Hand Painted White Jewelry Box

Hand painted, curved front, lift lid with mirror, top has ring rolls in the center-4 sections on one side and 1 section on the other side, open drawer, hand lined dusty rose sueded fabric interior, wooden drawer pulls.

Is your jewelry box useful or collectilbe?

And yes, a jewelry box can be both useful and collectible. You approach the purchase of a jewelry box differently if it is to be useful that if it is just a collectible one.

If you are looking for a functional jewelry box, you need to determine what you need it to do before you go looking. It is more than how much jewelry do I need to fit into this jewelry box. Do you want some space in the jewelry box to hand up any necklaces? How many drawers do I want and deep do I want them to be?

You might also want to consider where you are putting it as well. They range from a small decorative jewelry box you can put on your dresser to a jewelry armories which are pieces of furniture.

Do I want a wood jewelry box? If I go with wood, there are many different kinds of woods and colors of those woods. Am I matching something I already have or is it going to compliment the wood already in the room.

Why music boxes?

Ever since I was a little girl I have enjoyed music boxes. It fascinated me that something that small could produce just beautiful music. As a child I took piano lessons and tried to figure out the mechanics behind how the piano worked. Trying to compare that to the music box, it just didn’t make sense.

I would watch when the piano tuner came to tune my piano. I found out that the piano used strings and padded hammers to make the sounds. I did realize a difference in how they piano played verses that music box. A music box only played the melody one note at a time, where a piano could play much more than just the melody. So the principle behind a music box was different than the piano.

I watched a player piano once and realized that the mechanics behind that made more sense to transfer to a music box. Only it was on a much smaller scale. The idea of a rotating cylinder converting just the melody instead of all of the parts that a player piano used made sense.

So how did one tune this rotating cylinder to produce the melody that it played? Could the movements that are used in a music box be applied to other items? Or maybe the movements from another item what inspired the music box.

When I thought about the music boxes that I had or had seen, I realized that there were music boxes that were more than just a music box. They were connected to clocks and some toys. The music box still had to be “programmed” to play its tune automatically. I use the word programmed because it had to be automatic, but it by no means has anything to do with computers. An old fashioned music box is not a computer, nor does it have computer parts. What it does have is pins that stick out from a rotating cylinder. This cylinder is moved by a spring or by clockwork. That would explain the need to wind up a music box so that it plays its melody.

I did decide that while I did learn something about the workings of a music box, I was just as enchanted with just the reality of the music coming from the music box. Some times the why isn’t as important as it seems.
